Islam and politics are one, says Hadi

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said today Islam must remain an integral part of the country’s politics that has been tainted with corruption and racial intolerance.

He said the current economic crisis was a warning from Allah on the declining moral values of our society.

“I would remind you that disasters can happen through the hands of mankind with rulers who are unjust and morally corrupt.

"We have been warned by the increase in prices of essential goods and unemployment, crime, vice, diseases and natural disasters. All of this negative phenomenon will lead to destruction,” he said.

Abdul Hadi (picture) stressed that the absence of religion in politics has lead the Malay community astray in administering the country.

“Malay-Muslim leaders who have burdened the Muslim community cannot become a model of Islam to non-Muslims in the country because they are infected with declining moral capacity, corruption and abuse of power until they cannot perform the duties required by Islam,” he said in his keynote speech at the PAS muktamar (general assembly).

He said Umno, which has been given the trust to govern the country since independence, has betrayed the public and has become the colonial power that it detests.

“As a result of the public trust, Umno has seen this as an opportunity to enrich themselves with corruption and treason. In the end, the country’s wealth has been turned into their leader’s private possession, leaving the people to suffer,” he added.

Abdul Hadi said Muslims in the country have become weak because of their poor understanding of Islamic teachings, stressing that PAS must save the country and Muslim community.

“Umno only wants to retain power and not uphold the Malays and Islam because Umno Malays still support Barisan Nasional even when PAS candidates contest against the MCA and MIC but many non-Malays have shown their commitment to PAS by voting for our candidate,” he said.

He added that it was PAS’s responsibility to continuously introduce the teachings of Islam to the people and free them from the shackles of ignorance and political injustice.

“Allah has demonstrated that all nations that have held steadfast to Islam have become leading nations in the world… While Muslims from any nation that have left Islam even though rich became destructive, cruel, weak and are not qualified to lead and eventually will be destroyed,” he said.
