'Hilarious,' says Mat Sabu

Sep 21: "Fun and interesting," said PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu (pic) of the charge against him today over his speech on August 21 calling for a review of British version of historic events, especially the 1950 Bukit Kepong incident which killed colonial-era policemen.

“This is the case on history, let’s wait. This case is going to be fun and interesting,” he told reporters after being charged under Section 500 of the Penal Code at the Butterworth Sessions court.

Retaining his trademark humour, Mohamad said solving difference of opinions about history by going to the court was hilarious, adding that such a subject was normally debated through dialogue.

Party vice president Mahfuz Omar echoed him, saying the charge against Mat Sabu was "cartoonish" and came immediately after the prime minister's announcement that he wanted Malaysia to become the "best democratic country".

The equally witty Mahfuz (left) recalled that during Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s premiership, the latter was called a liar by his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"Today, it seems that Najib is worse than Abdullah. Everytime he announces something, what follows totally contradicts what he has said, especially on matters related to 1Malaysia.

"Here is the best democracy, where differences in opinions can land you in court," added Mahfuz.

Earlier, information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man lashed out at Najib for going against his reforms pledge, which included an end to politically-motivated arrests.

"The idea has barely sunk in when another politically motivated charge is levelled against Mohamad Sabu,” said Tuan Ibrahim.
