Utusan playing with fire, PAS warns

PAS Youth has slammed the pro-Umno blogs and Utusan over reports that Christian groups and the DAP were seeking to replace Islam with Christianity as the country's religion, saying these were “irresponsible” and potentially destabilising.

“Other than potentially threatening the peace, such speculations are seen as a means of seeking cheap political publicity and part of continuous efforts to hide weaknesses and failure in protecting the sanctity of the Islamic religion,” PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Tantawi said in a statement out on Sunday.

If Islam is weakening in Malaysia, it is Umno's fault

Nasrudin said Malaysians have accepted Islam as enshrined in the constitution that it is the religion of the federation, and Muslims made up the majority of Malaysia's pluralistic population.

If it was true Islam in Malaysia was getting weaker, it would be due to Umno's failure in fulfilling the mandate given to it by the Malay and Muslim community.

“For these reasons, Islam should not be in a position of being jeopardised and the Muslims would not allow Islam to be threatened,” said Nasrudin.

“If Umno had taken care of the practice of Islam well and strengthened it, I believe and am convinced that such speculations of moves to make Christianity the official religion of the nation would not have arisen. At the same time, Muslims would feel at peace and comfortable with practising their religion.”
