DAP upholds Islam as Malaysia’s official religion

KUALA LUMPUR : The DAP has categorically come out to state that Islam is the official religion of the Federation of Malaysia and also upholds the special position of the Malays and other bumiputras.

DAP Penang state secretary Ng Wei Aik said on Saturday, May 7 the party’s national chairman Karpal Singh has even declared during the Pakatan Rakyat National Convention that DAP is prepared to defend Islam’s position as the official religion of Malaysia.

“DAP also upholds the special position of the Malays and other umiputras as enshrined in the Federal Constitution of Malaysia,” he said.

He said the DAP condemned Utusan Malaysia and its continuous goal of slandering the DAP by spinning fact with fiction.

“This is a clear sign that Utusan Malaysia and by extension, Barisan Nasional is bankrupt of ideas and must now resort to slandering, spinning and segregating the people of Malaysia,” he said.

Ng said the front page on Utusan Malaysia on May 7 with the heading “Kritian Agama Rasmi?” is to strike fear into the Malay-Muslim populace of Malaysia in order to win back support not by earning it, but by scaring the people into submission.

This form of slandering is not new, as during the 1990 General Election, the aura of “Christian takeover” was played in order to discredit Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, then of Semangat 46.

A picture of him wearing a Kadazan headgear that featured a crucifix symbol was distributed and helped the BN to win with a strong majority.

“DAP wishes to ask Utusan and BN, is this the future of Malaysia? One that the citizens are divided and fear one another? If this is the case, then the future of our country is bleak and the brain drain will continue,” he said.
