Movement lambasted for setting quit deadline for Taib

KUCHING : The chairman of grassroots-based Movement for Change, Sarawak (MoCS) Francis Siah was slammed for his ultimatum in demanding Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down by August next year.

“Who is this Francis Siah and MoCS?” asked Peter Minos, who is deputy information chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu.

He was reacting to comments made by Siah that appeared in FMT yesterday.

“And who has given him the power to usurp the wishes of the whole of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu executive committee members and the 71 PBB branch chairmen throughout Sarawak who have passed a resolution that Taib will continue as PBB president and as chief minister?”

“Besides PBB members, there are many others including non-governmental organisations, associations, community leaders, Sarawak United People’s Party, Parti Rakyat Sarawak and Sarawak Democratic Party who have agreed with PBB that Taib must stay on as chief minister,” Minos added.

Yesterday Siah said MoCS had respectfully sent a request to Taib to step down as soon as possible as this was the general “consensus of the people of Sarawak that Taib has served long enough as chief minister”.

“He should step down as soon as possible, but we will give him till next August to do so,” Siah had said.

Blasting Siah for such a comment, Minos said: “I put it this way, if Taib is able and willing, why do we disturb him? Why pressure him to resign?

“It is not easy to get a seasoned, strong and wise leader like Taib.

“Who has Siah in mind?” asked Minos, pointing out that Siah should respect democratic and free wishes of the majority and the people. He added that Siah had no mandate to ask Taib to step down.

'Taib must step down by August next year'

PENANG : The Movement for Change, Sarawak (MoCS) wants Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down by August next year.

“Today, MoCS respectfully sends this request to the chief minister. It is the general consensus of the people of Sarawak that Taib has served long enough as CM.

"He should step down as soon as possible but we will give him till next August to do so,” its leader Francis Paul Siah said at a NGO-sponsored event in Penang last night.

“We still accord him due respect as the chief minister, but MoCS may not be that respectful if he is still at the helm of the state Government by next August.

"Today, we humbly plead and ask him to seriously consider stepping down. If Taib remains stubborn and refuses to listen, we may have to resort to other courses of action when the time is up.

"Then, the request and plea will turn to demand. We hope we will not have to demand as it would be uncomfortable for the chief minister,” Siah told the gathering of Sarawakians and Penangites at the Malaysia Day celebrations organised by the Malaysian Election Observers Network (MEO-Net) at Weld Quay on the island.

Stating that the August date next year should give Taib ample time to plan his departure, Siah also said that date should also enable the long-serving chief minister to celebrate his final ego-boosting 30th anniversary as Sarawak CM.

“We all know that this is a man with a huge ego and we will allow him to have a final bash on March 26, 2011. After that, Taib should seriously look at his crystal ball and if it is not afraid to tell him the truth unlike his Sarawak BN lieutenants, it would surely suggest that he listens more to the loud voices of dissent from Sarawakians than to his political sycophants.”

'Emulate the people of Penang'

Elaborating on the August date, Siah pointed out that MoCS was formed to advocate a new political culture for the state and promote democratization and “MoCS realises that this evolution is only possible with Taib out of the scene”.

“We announced the formation of MoCS on Aug 13 and we gave ourselves one year to help start this process minus Abdul Taib Mahmud. We are serious in this quest.

"The people of Sarawak are serious and we hope the chief minister would be gracious enough to help us achieve our target without much agony and pain for all parties concerned,” he said.

On the recent PBB supreme council’s declaration of support for Taib to continue as chief minister, Siah laughed it off asking: “Do you seriously believe anyone in the PBB council dare to say ‘No’ to such a powerful and vindictive boss knowing that they could easily be buried politically the minute they challenge his authority.”
“On top of that, 20 or 30 people in the PBB supreme council do not represent 2.6 million Sarawakians,” he added.

Earlier in his speech, Siah urged Sarawakians to emulate the people of Penang by opting for changes and vote in a new government in the coming state elections. He said that Penangites had made a wise decision in the 2008 General Election.

“Today, Penangites are generally happy as Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had performed admirably. There are noticeable changes with Lim’s more accountable and transparent administration.”

Siah added that he has relatives in Penang and “they have informed me that Penangites are generally very supportive of Lim and his plans of action for the state since taking office more than two years ago.

“So the people of Sarawak must cast their votes wisely in the coming state polls and elect sincere leaders of calibre who could help in the evolution towards a new political culture for the state - one that is free of corruption, nepotism and despotism,” he said.

Sabah, Sarawak losing points to KL

COMMENT Malaysia is 47 years old through the unification of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore in 1963. (Singapore was separated from Malaysia in 1965.)

The Kuala Lumpur-Kota Kinabalu-Kuching relationship must be relooked because of the imbalance between the centre and the periphery.

Most importantly, the 20-Point Agreement has been largely ignored in making the Malaysia that we have today.

Initial attempts by Sabah first chief minister Fuad Stephens to do so resulted in him being made Australian High Commissioner.

As a result, there were regressions from Sabah’s 20-Point Agreement and Sarawak’s 18-Point Agreement as seen in the “Allah” controversy and the ban on the Malay language Bible.

Both agreements on religion state that there should be no state religion for Sabah and Sarawak.

The “Borneonisation” of the public service as agreed to in the deal has also been violated. Over the years, more public servants from the peninsula were transferred to Sabah to fill in the void.

What development?

Unfortunately, an ignorant Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri recently stated that Sabahans in the interiors should be grateful as Sabah’s inclusion in Malaysia had ensured development in the state.

Using development as a bait is wrong because “development is the one term most used by politicians to cheat the people” (quoted from a Malayalam movie).

If development had indeed been provided, why is the road network in both states still bad? My brethren from both Sabah and Sarawak can attest to the fact that Sabah and Sarawak are two decades backwards compared to Peninsular Malaysia.

What development is Rahim speaking about when my brethren over there are still having difficulties to complete 11 years of education?

Contrary to Rahim’s statement, Kuala Lumpur has gained more than Kuching and Kota Kinabalu in the 47-year-old relationship.

The most recent evidence was Barisan Nasional’s slim majority in the 2008 general election, which was only made possible because of the safe deposit votes from Sabah and Sarawak.

In addition, the Mahathir administration should be “thanked” for initiating the IC project that created BN voters out of illegal immigrants from Indonesia and the Philippines

To address the imbalance, more autonomy should be accorded to Sabah and Sarawak. It can be initiated by increasing the petroleum royalty from the current 5% to 20%.

Secession by both Sabah and Sarawak is out of the question as it violates the agreement

Malaysia does not need Lee Kuan Yew's advice : Pak Lah

Lee Kuan Yew

KEPALA BATAS (Bernama) - Malaysia does not need any advice from Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew because it has its own way of governing the country which comprises multi-racial people, said former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

He said the cultural diversification and racial composition in Malaysia was far different from that of Singapore.

"We are too different from Singapore and Lee's statement which criticized the system being practised in this country cannot be accepted because Malaysia has adopted a different set of approaches and measures in managing issues involving the cultures and religions of its multi-racial population," he told reporters after hosting an Aidilfitri open house here Saturday.

"Malaysia far bigger than Singapore"

Malaysia's 5th prime minister Abdullah Badawi

Lee, in an interview published in the New York Times on Sept 1, had criticised the governing system system practised in Malaysia and accused that Malaysia was not being fair and had been sidelining its minority ethnic groups.

In the interview, Lee also envisioned that Malaysia could have done much better if it was not separated from Singapore because the island republic had achieved outstanding racial harmony.

Abdullah, who is Kepala Batas Member of Parliament, also refuted Lee's allegation that Malaysia had been sidelining minority ethnic groups in the country.

"If we really did that (sidelining minority ethnic groups), Malaysia would have been in trouble all along. We never sidelined any ethnic groups because all of them are equally important to the country," he said.

Unlike Singapore, Abdullah said, Malaysia was far bigger and consisted of various races and ethnic groups including those in Sabah and Sarawak.

"So far, there is no issue of certain races being sidelined and the government has always been fair to all races," he added.

"Tinggal lagi, ulama menyampaikan dakwah melalui lisan manakala wartawan menyebarkan maklumat melalui mata pena.

"Oleh itu, mereka hendaklah bergerak seiring untuk kepentingan dan kesejahteraan ummah dunia dan akhirat," katanya berucap di majlis dialog Menteri Besar Kelantan dengan wartawan anjuran Urusetia Penerangan Negeri, di Kota Bharu, malam tadi.

Hadir sama, Pengarah Urusetia Penerangan Kerajaan Negeri Abdul Rahman Yunus dan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Pembangunan Ladang Rakyat Dr Azmi Razali Azmi.

Sarawakians have only themselves to blame

(Hornbill Unleashed) - "Whose fault is it that Barisan Nasional wins at every election giving Abdul Taib Mahmud the chance to continue ruling Sarawak as chief minister?”

After 47 years of Merdeka, said Kayan Cultural Association president Miku Loyang, it is the fault of the Sarawakians themselves that their communities are now unable to even step foot into their ancestors’ land because of the Bakun Dam development.

“Who is wrong? No one but us, even though the government (BN) is like this, we still vote it in every general election,” said Miku, 68, from Balui Liko, Ulu Bakun, who is now resettled in Sungai Asap.

“I am angry. I want to vote against them. We will quietly and nicely place our crosses in the right slots,” added Miku, who was a civil servant and became Belaga councillor before his retirement.

However, Miku, who has been a polling agent before, conceded that it was massive challenge to register voters in the interior of Sarawak due to the blockades placed by logging companies along the roads leading to the villages.

He said that many were not registered as voters and that change could come about only when there were enough young voters casting their ballots.

Miku and three others, including his spouse Saran Juna, 61, a traditional Ngajat dancer, son-in-law Bengo Telang, 56 and Kuit Kilah, 55, from the Penan community, were in Penang to perform several songs and dances at an event organised by Malaysian Elections Observers Network (MEO-Net).

Voter registration, a sign of the times

MEO-Net coordinator, social activist Ong Boon Keong, said the performance, attended by about 100 people, was also part of the group’s Sarawak Road Show first anniversary celebration.

The road show organises monthly trips to the state’s interior to conduct voter registration and education and is supported by other groups, including Malaysian Trades Union Congress, Tanjung Bungah Residents Association, Suaram Penang, Penang Graduates Youth Association, Penang Chinese Journalists Association and Kenyalang Power Intiatiive.

The performers are in Kuala Lumpur today and will be performing at the Central Market Annex before leaving for Sarawak tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Kiut, formerly from Murum and now resettled in Sg Asap with 40 other Penan families, said he has not met with any YBs (parliamentarians or state assemblypersons) although he has been voting for years.

“Where are they, the chief minister and the YBs? They do not seem visible though I have been voting for them before,” said Kiut, who nows lives in a makeshift chicken coop and has untold sad stories to share about his life in Sarawak.

Telang, a Kayan farmer resettled in Sungai Asap, shared his heart-rending tale about the daily sufferings of the indigenous communities since the Bakun Dam project shattered their lives.

He said Malaysia Day held no meaning for him, although he should be very happy that Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, had gained independence from the British 47 years ago.

“I cannot begin to tell you how sad our stories are, words cannot describe our sadness, we have been cheated over and over again,” said Telang, who sings traditional Kayan songs.

“Our homes have disappeared and we cannot even hunt or gather food for our families; we have not been compensated when they took our homes away and now we are asked to pay for a poorly constructed house in Sungai Asap,” he lamented.

“There is no point for Sarawak to be independent within Malaysia (if the situation is like this for the indigenous communities), there is no difference from being under the colonial rule of the British,” Telang added.

PAS : Khir patut lupakan hasrat kembali jadi MB Selangor

Hadi's message on Malaysia Day

KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 16 : Conveying his Malaysia Day message, PAS president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang reiterated PAS's commitment to not only maintain good relations with different communities but also to exploit the country's diversity to strengthen it in accordance with Islamic teachings.

Hadi recalled what he had said at the last PAS annual Muktamar, in which he described Malaysians as a unique and fortunate group, living among diverse ethnic groups with various races and cultures.

“And this (diversity) is enriched by the people of Sabah and Sarawak,” said Hadi in a statement in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

Saying diversity was the country's greatest strength, he warned of a catastrophic repercussion if there was any mismanagement.

“This (repercussion) is what we see after 47 years Malaysia existed amid weaknesses of leadership in UMNO and Barisan Nasional, who should have been the protector of the people and make the country stand proud among the others,” lamented Hadi.

Hadi also stressed that PAS believed in the basic principle of equal treatment for all races, and this should be defended at all costs to strengthen race relationship in the country.

“Islam stresses that the tendency to belittle other people is inherently evil and must be avoided,” he said.

“It is strange that some people claim to be pious to Allah but fail to advocate true justice (as demanded by Islam),” he added.

Pakatan yakin menang pilihan raya Sarawak

KOTA BHARU, 16 Sept (Hrkh) : Pakatan Rakyat (PR) yakin mampu menewaskan Barisan Nasional (BN) pada pilihan raya Sarawak jika amalan demokrasi dilaksanakan dengan cara yang betul.

Mursyidul Am PAS, Tuan Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat berkata, PR bukan sahaja mampu menguasai Sarawak sahaja, sebaliknya seluruh Semenanjung sekiranya negara benar-benar mengamalkan prinsip demokrasi.

Najib, Dr M put on show for S'wak polls, mask business scandals

Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Mahathir, Najib - murky dealings

Those who have forecast a major power tussle at Umno may have to reassess the latest situation. The two protagonists Prime Minister Najib Razak and his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad appear to have knocked out a deal or at least reached an initial compromise.

At glittery function on the eve of Malaysia Day, both men were all smiles and Najib not only paid tribute to the elder statesman but also pledged to continue the latter’s Vision 2020 economic plan.

“Our aspiration was encapsulated when Tun Dr Mahathir launched an articulated Vision 2020 and we are the generation that will make it happen,” Najib said in his speech at the inaugural Music Arts Style International Festival or MASiF 2010.

Najib chickens out, Mahathir sings new tune

To financial analysts, Najib’s words provided further proof that his own New Economic Model, due to be fleshed out next month, will be a watered-down version to appease Mahathir. The ex-premier does not want any further lifting of protectionist barriers even though experts have warned they would harm the economy.

Mahathir encouraged and supported Perkasa

To the political observers, few were surprised as many had expected Najib to chicken out. Mahathir's ruthlessness is legendary and Najib’s scandal-plagued record makes him vulnerable to exposure and therefore pressure from the older man, they said.

But Mahathir also sprang a surprise of his own. The former prime minister who ruled Malaysia with a fist of iron for 22 years made a rare departure from his racial rhetoric.

“Although we belong to different races and different ethnic groups but we feel that we are all Malaysians. We may have our differences but not so much that we do not regard this country as ours. Malaysia is our country. Whatever our differences, I am sure everyone in Malaysia will feel a real brotherhood between the people of Malaysia,” Mahathir said in a speech that followed Najib’s.

Hoping for Malaysians to take the bait

Political pundits whom Malaysia Chronicle spoke with were unimpressed. They believe Mahathir was playing to the gallery, pointing out that it was under his administration that the seeds for Malaysia’s deepening racial polarization were sown.

Umno's race-rhetoric lost the BN votes in 2008

That the Sarawak state polls had to be held within the next 10 months also made it expedient for Mahathir and Najib to put on a public show that all was well in Umno, they added.

“This is just another example of the depth of deception and duplicity at Umno. As we said many times, Najib’s zero-tolerance for racism and the recent Umno rejection of Perkasa is just a sandiwara stage-managed by their newspapers and online portals,” PKR strategic director Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

“They will need to keep up the pretence for the next few months so that Malaysians especially Sarawakians will start to believe that things have really changed. But it is easy to spot through the shadow-play. Just ask yourselves, before Perkasa, wasn’t Umno racist. As it is now, can you trust them or MCA and MIC?”

Huge business scandals

There is widespread speculation that the recent brouhaha over ultra-Malay rights group Perkasa was also aimed to deflect attention from a series of business scandals involving Najib, Mahathir and another former prime minister Abdullah Badawi.

Abdullah involved in MAS

Controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin had given Malaysians a taste of how deeply involved Mahathir and Badawi could be in the RM8 billion ringgit of losses racked up by national airline MAS. Raja Petra also accused Najib of wanting to cancel a Letter of Intent to China Railway Engineering Corp in favour of China Harbour Engineering Corp so that he could re-negotiate and benefit from a multi-billion ringgit double-tracking railway project.

“They are all holding pistols to each other’s throat but nobody will be so silly as to pull the trigger because this is within Umno. If it involves Pakatan, that is a different story. But now as it is, they will give into negotiations with money the most important factor and how to settle with everyone more or less happy,” a political watcher had told Malaysia Chronicle. He was referring to the Umno infighting between camps aligned to Najib, Mahathir and Badawi,

Burning issues left over from British rule

COMMENT For the first time in 47 years since the new Federation of Malaysia came into being on Sept 16, 1963; Malaysia Day is being officially celebrated today as a national public holiday.

This is 47 years too late say critics. Others like Sabah opposition strongman Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan say “better late than never”.

Jeffrey has been waging a long and lonely battle to get recognition for Malaysia Day. As recently as last year, police stormed a Malaysia Day function within the compound of a house in Kota Kinabalu. Jeffrey was scheduled to speak at the function. They ordered the assembled crowd to disperse but left Jeffrey, an ex-Internal Security Act detainee, alone after advising him “not to create trouble”.

Malaysia Day was a taboo subject until Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, in a belated recognition, declared late last year that Sept 16 would henceforth be a national public holiday from this year.

But it’s by no means clear that the official line on Malaysia has changed. This year, according to Putrajaya, the country celebrated 53 years of independence. Peninsular Malaysia, formerly British Malaya, became independent on Aug 31, 1957.

Sabah and Sarawak never tire of pointing out that they became independent much later on Aug 31,1963 and, therefore, independence for them means 47 years this year.

Not so, point out official historians in Putrajaya and cite the United States of America as an example. The US became independent of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on July 4, 1776 with just 13 colonies along the eastern seaboard of the North American continent. Although the great majority of the 52-odd states joined the US much later at various dates, 1776 is still held to be the year of independence for the US.

Sabahans and Sarawakians beg to differ and argue that there’s no basis for comparison between the US and Malaysia.

The US, stress Sabahans and Sarawakians, did not change its name or its Constitution.

In the case of Malaysia, Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak came together on 16 Sept 1963 as equal partners to form a new Federation known as Malaysia. Malaysia, it is further pointed out, is not a name change for Malaya and the admission of new territories to the existing Federation of 1957.

Patently, Putrajaya is not an accurate rendition of the nation’s history but this is hardly surprising if we glance at the books used in schools these days.

The history of the country is being completely re-written with a heavy political slant, the colonial British depicted as villains; former villains, thieves and murderers hailed as freedom fighters; the contributions of many non-Malay personalities blotted out, the harsh Japanese occupation glossed over and the role of the communist movement in the struggle against Japanese occupation and for freedom denied.

There are two aspects to the story of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia.

Firstly, the United Nations Referendum of 1963 discovered that only a third of the people in both territories favoured the idea of Malaysia. These were mostly the local Muslim minorities who perhaps felt more secure in the new Federation. This was especially so when Kuala Lumpur leaders indicated to the local Muslims that they would be the rulers and proxies for the Federal Government.

Today, the local Muslims have cause for regret in Sabah where the influx of illegal immigrants entering the electoral rolls with MyKads via the backdoor have effectively disenfranchised them and robbed them of many opportunities made available by the government under the Federal Constitution to Natives.

Despite the other Natives and the Chinese overwhelmingly voting against Malaysia, the British and the Malayan Government pushed ahead with the idea of Malaysia.

The other Natives wanted a period of independence and further details and clarification on Malaysia before considering the idea of the new Federation. Many of them were keener on a Federation of Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei but the 1962 Azahari Rebellion in Bandar Seri Begawan killed the Sultanate’s interest in both Malaysia and a North Borneo Federation.

The commercially-minded Chinese were mainly against Malaysia, both in Sabah and Sarawak.

Many independent historians today liken the march of Malayan troops into Sabah and Sarawak on Sept 16, 1963 as equivalent to Indonesian troops invading East Timor as the colonial Portuguese pulled out.

Twenty-seven years later, the UN Security Council kicked out Indonesia from East Timor, now known as Timor Leste. They predict that the same thing will happen to the occupation of Sabah and Sarawak by Malaya. Malaysia was among the few nations in the world to vote against the idea of Indonesia getting the boot in East Timor, and for obvious reasons. At the same time, Malaysia recognized Kosovo when the Muslim-majority province unilaterally pulled out from Serbia.

The other aspect of the story of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia is that both territories are not equal partners with Malaya as initially envisaged – Singapore was booted out in 1965 – but virtually colonies of Peninsular Malaysia. This was something that was feared in 1963 by the people of Sabah and Sarawak. Malayan Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman gave numerous assurances in public that there won’t be any recolonization of the Borneo territories by Malaya in the wake of the British departure.

The “colonies of Malaya” theory has credence for a number of reasons.

For starters, the non-Muslim majority in both states are hindered from occupying the Chief Minister’s post and denied the opportunity to be Governors.

Elsewhere, Petronas and its numerous subsidiaries worldwide doesn’t have even a single person from Sabah or Sarawak on their governing boards; there has been no Borneonisation of the Federal Civil Service in the two states; and the Federal Government is not being shared equally with Sabah and Sarawak by Malaya.

Jeffrey, meanwhile, is flogging a long list of issues viz. Malaysia Agreement 1963; 20 Points; Sabah Rights; autonomy; equal rights; equal share of the Federal Government; Borneonisation; the meaning of Federation in the Malaysian Constitution; and that Sabah and Sarawak helped form Malaysia and did not join it.

These are burning issues left over from the brief British colonial occupation of Sabah and Sarawak, from after World War 11 to 1963, and needs to be settled by Putrajaya in consultation with the United Nations, the British Government and the governments of Sabah and Sarawak.

Guan Eng laments raw deal for Sabah, Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today that Sabah and Sarawak are still getting a raw deal 47 years after the two states came together with Malaya and Singapore to form Malaysia.

“It is unfortunate that 47 years after the formation of Malaysia, the wealth from Sabah and Sarawak’s natural resources is still not being enjoyed fairly and equally. Until today, many Malaysians from both states are living in poor conditions,” said Lim in his Malaysia Day message today.

Without naming anyone, Lim claimed the two states continued to be overlooked without particular consideration for their natives.

This will be the first year that Malaysia Day is being marked as a national public holiday.

Sabah, then known as North Borneo, Sarawak, Malaya and Singapore came together to form Malaysia on September 16, 1963. Singapore was later expelled from the Federation in 1965.

“From one angle, there are those in the peninsular who are fighting to defend their special Bumiputera status which they see as their right and cannot even be discussed at all. From another angle, those fighters do not even care for the same special Bumiputera status in Sabah and Sarawak.

“DAP practices equal rights without choosing race and religion. At the same time, DAP respects the Federal Constitution drawn up in 1957,” he said.

Lim said if the federal government was sincere about protecting the special position of Bumiputeras, it should ensure equal treatment for members of the community in both west and east Malaysia.

“The federal government cannot push Sabah and Sarawak to the sidelines. It has to ensure that both states enjoy the same opportunities in education, employment, investment and business just as the peninsular states,” he said.

Pembunuhan Susilawati : Ulasan Tuan Guru Menteri Besar Kelantan
