Hadi orders meeting over Nik Aziz’s EGM call

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — Embattled PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang broke his silence today over the party’s spiritual leader’s call to oust “problematic leaders” by ordering a meeting to discuss the issue.

The conservative leader also said he did not want PAS’s internal issues debated in any media but through consultations according to party traditions.

“I have directed the PAS secretary-general to decide a suitable date as soon as possible to hold a meeting to discuss the issues that have cropped up,” Hadi said in a statement released late tonight.

“We pray to Allah to guide us in our efforts to solve this problem and to further strengthen the party,” he added.

Party spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat on Thursday asked for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) or muktamar to depose “problematic leaders” hampering close ties with their Pakatan Rakyat allies by seeking alliances with political rivals Umno and issuing orders to ban beer sales.

The Kelantan mentri besar’s tirade was against leaders like deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa, Datuk Mustafa Ali and Selangor chief Datuk Hasan Ali.

All three are allied to Hadi, who had broached Malay and Muslim unity talks with Umno.

Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has sought to further drive the wedge between PAS leaders by saying the split was serious but hoped for future unity talks.

Hadi played down the current strife in the party, saying it had gone through worse since being formed in 1951 and has succeeded to reach its current position now.

“I call on all members and leaders at all levels to be patient and calm to face the current internal issues,” he added in the statement issued by his political secretary Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
