MCA sec-gen : Dr M should watch his mouth

MCA secretary-general Senator Wong Foon Meng on Wednesday expressed his regret over Dr Mahathir’s remark claiming that the Chinese are the masters in this country.

He added that the comments will not help in fostering racial harmony in the country.

“No party should be allowed to simply comment on racial issues. If not, it would affect the country’s racial harmony and will not contribute to the nation-building process,” Wong said.

“We regret Mahathir’s statement that appears to criticise our Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's initiative in liberalising the economy.

“By equating that the liberalisation of our country's affirmative action policies is intended to take over something from the Malays is also to have an outdated mindset in a zero sum game,” he pointed out.

Voters have sent a strong message

Wong added that after the 308 general elections last year, people have voted in BN to continue serving and leading the country.

“When we look at the poll’s result, the people have sent a strong message to the government.

“The Cabinet led by Najib emphasizes the people’s voice. With the change in the political landscape, Najib is leading the people through various obstacles to overcome the impact of economic challenges.”

He said that in April 2009, Najib announced a series of measures to liberalise the financial and services sub-sectors which included removing the 30 per cent Bumiputera quota from 27 service sub-sectors.

Do not make inflammatory remarks

“This shows that Najib has the courage to carry out necessary reforms for the good of the country and its people.”

“The reforms carried out by Najib does not mean that the government no longer helps the Bumiputeras. On the contrary, the government is using another method to achieve the same target through the setting up of Ekuinas, which aims to consolidate the Bumiputeras’ participation in the economy,” Wong reiterated.

He emphasized that everyone should help reduce political conflicts in the country and not make any inflammatory remarks.
