PAS elections committee apologises for omitting candidates

KUALA LUMPUR : The PAS central elections committee has apologised for its "inadvertent technical mistake" in omitting five names from the list of candidates eligible to contest posts in the party's central committee next month.

Its chairman, Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman, said a review revealed that the list of candidates issued on May 17 did not contain the names of Kuala Selangor MP Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakob, Keningau PAS division head Hishamuddin Sulaiman, PAS Youth central executive committee member Kamal Ashaari and Pasir Puteh MP Muhammad Husin.

"I, as the representative of the elections committee, apologise for the inadvertent technical mistake," he told a news conference Saturday.

Abdul Halim said the mistake had been rectified and the five candidates had been informed of their eligibility to contest in the elections to be held at the PAS general assembly from June 3 to 5.

Earlier, it was felt that only the name of Dr Dzulkefly, a PAS central committee member, had been omitted from the list of 82 names of the eligible candidates, he said.

However, after a thorough review, the committee found that four other names had also been left out, he added.

"With the correction, the number of people eligible to contest posts in the PAS Central Committee for 2011/2013 is 87," he said.

Abdul Halim said a review was also made of the candidates eligible to contest in the PAS Youth executive committee and Dewan Ulama executive committee.

"As for PAS Youth, there were 68 names but only 63 are eligible to contest as the other five have exceeded the age limit of 40.

"For the Dewan Ulama, there are only 24 candidates as two names from the original list of 26 were inserted twice with different spelling," he said.

Abdul Halim said all the eligible candidates had until May 26 to state their agreement to contest or otherwise.
